Friday, May 26. On the way to Salzburg, we stop by Traunstein, the hometown of the new Pope Benedict. We expected banners and souvenirs, and were surprised to find none. This is the town's maypole. Setting up a maypole, with symbols of the town's bulldings and economy, is a Bavarian tradition dating back to the 16th century.
